PHILOSOPHY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

We believe there are three essential components for the successful education of the child. These three components are listed in order of responsibility to God for the training of godly men and women.

     1. Parents – The God-given primary responsibility for the training and education of children is that of the parents. The success of a student at Bethany will be directly correlated with his parents’ faith in Christ as personal Savior and their commitment to honoring God’s Word in separating from the sinful practices and lifestyles of the unsaved world.

     2. Church – Next in importance is the ministry of the local church in the life of the family. We strongly encourage every family to be committed, through attendance and participation, to a “Biblical” church. A “Biblical” church is a church that adheres to the fundamentals of the Christian faith and endeavors to keep itself pure from worldly practices and ecumenical movements (toleration of unbiblical teaching and practice).  To attend Bethany Christian School it is required that the student and his/her family regularly attend a fundamental Church.

     3. School – Finally, and in proper order, is the school that the parents have chosen to help them with the education of their children. The school will never be able to stand in place of the parents or church. However, in proper order these three components play a stabilizing and strengthening role in the education and development of a child.

When these three are in agreement in philosophy, standards, and convictions, the outcome will be the development of men and women who are firmly grounded in Truth and able to function faithfully in the world around them. When there is inconsistency and disagreement in these three, there is a propensity toward disrespect for one of these authorities and may result in rebellion to authority in the life of the child.

Bethany Christian School is a ministry of Bethany Baptist Church and is the extension of the Christian home. We believe there is a Biblical perspective for every academic discipline. We believe that true knowledge can be gained only as each discipline is taught and learned from the perspective of the principles of God’s Word.

CURRICULUM

At Bethany Christian School we recognize that Jesus Christ is the source of all knowledge and that according to Proverbs 10:14, “Wise men lay up knowledge.” The Bible is the guide for life; therefore, Bible study is a recognized part of the curriculum of Bethany Christian School. All students have a Bible class that includes Bible study, Bible memorization and practical Christian training. We use the Bible program ABEKA (developed by Pensacola Christian College). In the Bible classes and chapel, students are required to use the King James Version of the Bible.

Note: The School reserves the right to admit or to dismiss students based on its own criteria of spiritual commitment, academic performance, and personal qualifications including a willingness to cooperate with the school administration and to abide by its policies and regulations.

KINDERGARTEN

Bethany Christian School uses "A Beka Book" curriculum in kindergarten. This program includes Bible, phonics, reading, manuscript writing, numbers, and simple math. With these concepts in hand, the student can then confidently enter first grade and his/her parents can be assured that he is more than adequately prepared.

Half-day kindergarten is provided for 4 year old children, with day care available for parents who need an all-day program. It is our desire to present K4 students with a variety of learning situations and information without the pressure or stress of grading. Our 5 year old curriculum exceeds the requirements set forth by the North Carolina Department of Education. Students' work is sent home to parents weekly, and report cards are issued quarterly.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADES 1-6

At the elementary school level, great emphasis is placed on the basic fundamentals of education. The "A Beka Book" and ACE curriculum is used. This begins with Bible study in each grade every day. A strong phonics program begins at the first grade level. A mathematics program using traditional methods provides the student with an excellent mathematical base. Penmanship is still considered important. Homework, report cards, concerned teachers, and informed parents are the rule and not the exception.

High standards and effective discipline are hallmarks of our elementary program. It is our desire to train students to be diligent and use their abilities to the fullest extent and not be content with just getting by.

HIGH SCHOOL

The teenage years are times of spiritual and academic growth. Social habits, friendships, goals and desires are established for life during these important formative years. Because a student's future is dependent upon the training and guidance given during these years, we believe a Bible-based education is imperative. Self discipline, obedience, respect for authority, love for fellow man, country and God, honesty, and dependability are emphasized and taught from a Christian perspective.

Our program meets and exceeds the requirements established by the Education Department of the State of North Carolina. All students must follow the course of study recommended to them.
